Primera Engine Stuff:
Nissan's new 1.8-litre engine is
the cleanest petrol engine in its
class. With a powerful new 32-bit engine management system the UK-developed new
technologies ensure the 1.8-litre engine does not dilute the Primera's sporting
appeal.
The new engine develops 97 per cent of its maximum torque at low engine
speeds between 2400-4800rpm. Peak torque of 151Nm is generated at just 2800rpm,
peak power of 113PS at 5600rpm. In mixed-use economy tests it returned an
average of over 38mpg.
The new engine also includes a series of innovations designed to further reduce
noise and harshness. A new inverted tooth design of timing chain dramatically
reduces friction and is almost silent.
Durability testing of the new engine design is exhaustive and includes Nissan's unmatched
over-speed durability test. The test involves running the engine on a
dynamometer at speeds 15 per cent over the red line
for 40 hours continuously (that's
7600 rpm for nearly 4 days, maybe that's
how Nissan can give a 3 Yr warranty! ).
StarTrek Diagnostics:
On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) system warn the driver if emissions are exceeding
strict standards soon to be introduced across Europe. The system detects any
component or system deterioration that might affect the car's low emission
levels.
The OBD system detects even a momentary increase in emissions, the driver is
immediately alerted and a record made of the episode in the vehicle's engine
management system. If the situation persists, an indicator light remains on
until it has been investigated and resolved by a dealer.
The OBD system senses things such as the engine misfiring or the catalyst
malfunctioning that may affect emission levels. It exceeds European legislation
emission levels of harmful hydrocarbons (HC) and nitrogen oxides (Nox) not due
until 2005. Variable valve timing and direct ignition are key to the engine's
low emissions & the Primera has achieved the ISO 14001 accreditation for its
environmental management system.
Green Award:
Switzerland's Association for Transport and Environment has conducted its annual
survey for 'green' cars and awarded a top class
title to the Nissan Primera.
The Primera 1.8-litre, launched in September 99, topped the medium sized
category for family cars. Unlike many ecologically based analyses, the ATE
evaluation not only takes into account the 'green issues' such as fuel
consumption and exhaust emissions, but also performance related factors such as
maximum speed and noise.
Nissan say the Primera's success is down to a swirl control valve in the
engine's inlet tract. This was a feature previously reserved for diesel-engined
vehicles. The new 1.8-litre engine was among the first petrol engines to adopt
the system. The valve is closed during warm-up and at low engine speeds,
redirecting the air flowing through the inlet ports. The re-routed airway
increases tumble swirl in the combustion chamber to enhance combustion for
improved emissions and reduced fuel consumption (oh no
please don't compare this to a diesel)
